Street Sweeping

Each spring, the Town of Diamond Valley undergoes a spring cleanup, which includes a town-wide street sweeping blitz.  The street sweeping initiative is crucial for clearing away debris and leftover materials from the roads. This effort not only enhances the cleanliness and safety of our streets, but also plays a significant part in our environmental stewardship by preventing pollutants from entering our waterways.

Spring Clean-up Schedule and Details:

  • Program Duration: Typically undertaken annually for one week in early May (weather permitting).
  • Sweeping Days: Scheduled from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Stay Informed: Residents of Diamond Valley are asked to watch for signs in their community and remove vehicles from roadways when requested.

Here’s How You Can Help:

  1. Move Your Vehicle: Ensure you move your vehicle off the street to allow for thorough sweeping. Driveways, garages, and alleyways are excellent alternatives. Please leave enough clearance for the street sweepers to pass without obstruction. If you have no other options, the Town will permit parking on boulevards during street sweeping week.
  2. Manage Waste Bins: If your sweeping day coincides with your front street waste collection day, please keep your bins off the road. Suitable alternative locations for your bins include grassy boulevards or your lawn. Ensure that the bins do not block the sidewalk, maintaining clear and safe passage for pedestrians.

  3. Clear the Roadway of Obstructions:

    • Remove Prohibited Driveway Ramps: Any non-standard driveway ramps that extend from the curb and gutter into the road should be removed. These ramps can interfere with the effectiveness of the sweeping and are generally not allowed.
    • Remove Street Obstacles: Ensure that any temporary obstacles like basketball nets or other items are removed from the roadway. These objects can prevent the sweepers from cleaning effectively and pose safety hazards.

Important Notes:

  • The Town hires independent contractors to conduct street sweeping in Diamond Valley. They typically come into our town with 3 or 4 sweepers and blitz everything as fast as they can.
  • Relaying the street sweepers'  exact position / schedule to residents is difficult as they move quickly and road material varies, which determines the rate at which they move (along with parked cars).
  • A-frame signboards will be strategically placed to inform residents of the street sweeping coming up in their neighbourhood.  Residents will also be notified through social media.
  • The Town will not return to sweep a missed portion of street due to vehicle or waste cart blockage.

What do I do if my area of the street was missed?

If debris is left behind on your street because a car or cart has not been moved and you want to be a good neighbour, you can sweep the debris yourself.

If you decide to sweep missed debris yourself, please follow these suggestions from Waste Management:

  •  Use garbage bags for collecting gravel, dust, rocks, and other debris.  Do not leave debris loose in your black cart. This will help keep the air free of dust and keep collection trucks clean.
  • Ensure heavy road debris is double-bagged to prevent bag damage.  Do not exceed the 20kg/45lb weight limit per bag, and do not overload the waste carts.
  • All bagged debris should be placed inside your black cart for collection.

This community-wide effort requires everyone's participation to be effective. Please adhere to the posted signage and ensure your vehicles are moved during street sweeping week until your neighbourhood has been swept.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping Diamond Valley clean and environmentally responsible. Together, we can ensure our streets are safe and our community remains beautiful.
