Additional Information
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program (administered by Circular Materials) takes over recycling as of April 1, 2025 – no changes to accepted materials.
Businesses are no longer eligible for curbside waste pickup.
Residents with medical needs or large families may apply for additional carts (fees apply).
Extra garbage bags can be purchased at the Waste Transfer Station, northwest of Black Diamond.
“Organics” refers to materials such as food scraps, yard waste, and soiled paper — items do not need to be certified organic.
Why the Change?
Biweekly garbage pickup encourages more recycling & composting, helping reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
A 2018 pilot in Okotoks showed less landfill waste and lower contamination in carts.
A recent Diamond Valley waste audit found up to two-thirds of black cart waste could be diverted.
Communities already using this model include:
Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Stony Plain, St. Albert, Strathcona County, and Chestermere.
These changes reflect proven best practices for sustainable, cost-effective waste services.
