Burn Permits, Fire Pits and Fireworks

Burn Permits

Any burning outside an approved fire pit requires a burn (fire) permit. 

Any person wishing to obtain a fire permit must apply to the Fire Department via the online form below or by phone and email:

Fire Permit applications may require an inspection of the area before approval.

Failure to comply with these regulations may result in charges or a fine.

Any residents living in Foothills County must apply for a burn permit on their website.

Fire Pits

Burn permits are required except when using acceptable outdoor fire pits. Acceptable fire pits meet the following criteria:

  • must only be used for recreational fires;
  • must maintain a minimum 3 metre separation from buildings, property lines and combustible material;
  • must be enclosed with sides made from bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal or other non-combustible material accepted by the Fire Chief;
  • must be equipped with a screen cover sufficient to contain and reduce airborne sparks;
  • must not exceed a height of 0.6 metres when measured from the lowest point of the surrounding grade to the top of the pit opening; and,
  • must not have an opening exceeding a width, length or diameter of 1 metre.

Fireworks

Launching of private fireworks is strictly prohibited in the Town of Diamond Valley except by permit.  Contact the Fire Department to apply for a permit.

  3. A fire permit is NOT required if the fire is contained to an approved non-combustible receptacle located on private property.

    • Such receptacles shall not be located in a front yard, located less than 3m from any structure or property line, located beneath any tree or power line.
    • All burning materials must be clean dry wood, the fire shall be contained to a reasonable size so that embers, sparks or smoke emanating does not endanger persons or property or cause any objectionable effect on nearby property.

    *Note: Recreational Fireworks are not permitted within the Town of Diamond Valley limits.

    I agree to the terms and conditions as stated in Fire Bylaw 2024-45

  6. Clean dry wood*

    I agree that I will only burn clean dry wood.

  7. Winds over 30km/hr*

    I understand no burning is allowed during winds higher than 30km/hr

  8. Offensive Materials*

    I understand that no offensive materials may be burnt including Treated or Painted Wood, Tar Paper, Rubber, Asphalt Shingles, Oily Rags, Tires, Plastics, Household Garbage, Paint Cans, Used Motor Oil, Furniture, etc.

  9. Safety*

    I understand that the fire shall always be attended by a responsible adult, must be on a non-combustible surface, a safe distance from combustible materials and buildings, and some form of extinguishing equipment must be at hand.

  10. Fire Ban Awareness & Safety*

    I understand that if a fire ban has been declared, this fire permit is suspended. It is my responsibility to be aware of fire bans.

  11. Fire Extingushing*

    I understand that a Fire Services or Peace Officer may require the person responsible for the fire to relocate, remove or extinguish the fire if, in their opinion, the fire contravenes any provision of Bylaw 2024-45.

    I understand that on the day of the burn, I must notify the Foothills Regional Emergency Communications Center of our burn permit.

    By checking the "I agree" box below, you agree and acknowledge that 1) your application will not be signed in the sense of a traditional paper document, 2) by signing in this alternate manner, you authorize your electronic signature to be valid and binding upon you to the same force and effect as a handwritten signature, and 3) you may still be required to provide a traditional signature at a later date.

  17. Protection of Privacy Act

    The personal information collected through the Burn Permits Application is for the purpose of providing the requested burn permit. This collection is authorized under section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act.
